Encanto movie poster, Disney

Is the Disney movie, Encanto, just as good as people say it is?

Encanto is a movie that came out on November 24th 2021, and for some reason it took me almost two months to get around to watch it. One of the problems with Disney is that they have set the bar so high with some of their amazing movies like Moana and Toy Story 3, that it’s hard to top that really high standard of amazing movies. So whenever a new Disney movie comes out, I usually don’t watch it immediately. I’m not the biggest Disney fan anyway, so why waste a couple hours of my life watching a mediocre movie that they pumped out. But then I heard talk about how amazing Encanto was, and I knew I had to watch it.

So was it really as good as some people said it was? In one word, yes. Everything from the songs, to the visuals, to the plot were amazing. But first let’s start with the songs.

The songs in this movie were amazing to say the least, not only were they catchy, but they were also well written, well composed, and all around amazing. The songs such as “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure” would get stuck in my head all day, and the only cure was to listen to them on repeat. The visuals were also great in these songs. There was one bit in “Surface Pressure” where the character singing thought that everyone was relying on her, and this was portrayed by her carrying the whole town on her back. Furthermore, the transitions in “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” were amazing as it went from character to character all explaining they’re encounters with Bruno, and what terrible things he did to them. All of the songs in this movie were amazing, and most of them will probably still be playing on repeat for the next couple of months.

But it wasn’t just the songs in this movie that made it fantastic. The visuals in all of the scenes were amazing. Just from watching the trailers, you can get a great idea of this magical world that you are about to explore for the next hour and a half. The lighting is fantastic, and all of the settings are like something out of a storybook. One of the main plot points in the story is that all of the kids have their own room based on their power, or as they put it in the movie, gift. But needless to say, all of these rooms are fantastical, with one child’s room being an entire jungle. Needless to say, all of the world building, lighting, and all around visuals in this movie was great.

But then we get to the plot. The plot was one of the strongest parts of this movie, in my opinion. It had themes about having your worth being judged by what you’re good at, and what too much pressure can do to a person, wrapped all together with a magical plot about a family member who disappeared, and the prophecy that they left behind. The plot is not only one of fantasy, but a coming of age story as the main character never got a gift, and so she’s consistently grappling with the fact that she’ll never be good enough. It’s a really touching story, and I suggest you give it a watch.

Overall, Encanto is one of the best from Disney for a while. I highly recommend you watch this movie, even if you aren’t a Disney fan, as it is one of the best movies I have seen in the entirety of 2021. I rate this movie and 9/10.
