On Oct 23, 2024 the WTMS Journalism students had the honor to meet Mayor Lawrence of Winslow Township. Autumn Perry, a seventh grader journalism student, conducted the interview in the media center while the journalism and TV Production students were in attendance. She provided a lot of information about our Township and what’s going on behind the scenes. I bet you’re curious so let’s find out what she had to say!
Many residents wonder what encouraged Mayor Lawrence to become our Mayor and this is what she stated.
“I was elected to the Township committee about 20 years ago and I was selected by the previous Mayor to be his Deputy Mayor”. Unfortunately, our Mayor passed and as Deputy Mayor I was moved into that position and ultimately elected by residents of Winslow Township to actually be the full time Mayor.”
As any other Township of course it comes with struggles and tribulations.
She explained, “The biggest problem with our Township right now is misinformation. If you have a question please contact the township with your concerns for the right information.”
As young people we would love to know how to get more involved with our local government.
Mayor Lawrence went on to explain, “I try to gain the perspective of those who are coming up, typically every year between January and March we have students from the high school come to the Township. They spend the day to see how the government operates and they visit all of our departments. At the end of the day, they actually come into the courtroom and sit up on the podium, somebody sits at my chair as Mayor and they have a mock township meeting. Then, we have a question and answer period from them and we try to get an insight on what you guys want.”
Winslow Township is definitely a cool place to be! What exactly makes it so unique and great?
“One of the coolest things to do is painting in the park with your families. We also ran a job fair for teens and adults to find jobs that they may like in the Township. We also have family day and Juneteenth so there are many things to do in Winslow.”
What makes Winslow Township so special?
“Oh Winslow Township is great! We have wonderful people, we have wonderful communities so Winslow has a lot going for it. When you go out you represent us, when you go to different events and people say to you where are you from? Say it proud, I’m from Winslow!” Exclaimed Mayor Lawrence.
