The Student Government Association (SGA) is one of the amazing organizations offered to the students of WTMS. The interest meeting was held on September 13 by advisors Ms. Donohue and Ms. Parzanese. SGA meets 1-2 times per month and participates in activities such as live group discussions, community service projects, field trips, school spirit activities, and leadership development activities.
In SGA, members were required to do a lot of beneficial things in order to join and upon joining SGA, members and teachers were interviewed about what they expect, how well they can do, and why they join SGA.
“I decided to join student government to help make other students feel more comfortable in this school. Also because I didn’t get the opportunity to do student government last year.” explained Khole Oum, a new member of SGA.
Upon joining, members of SGA faced challenges as the teachers’ expectations were high.
“Students must have a 75% or higher to be considered for the SGA. All students must abide by the school code of conduct. Any student who has been suspended (in school or out of school) more than once in the 2022-2023 school year is ineligible. Students must be in compliance with attendance policies. Students must participate and be engaged in all events. Each student is expected to attend meetings, events, activities and be active participants. If expectations are not met, students may be removed according to the policies set forth in our Constitution and Bylaws,” explained Ms. Donohue.
“Students are expected to be model middle school students, promote school spirit, participate in all fundraisers and service projects and bring ideas back from the other students to make their middle school years memorable.” added Ms.Donohue, SGA Advisor.
SGA needs members who can be leaders, who can set a positive example and inspire others.
“We are looking for students that are committed to following school rules and making WTMS a positive learning environment and being a leader that other students respect.” explains Ms.Donohue.
As we interview new members of SGA, we ask them how SGA can benefit them and other students around them when participating in events and meetings.
“The benefits are meeting and connecting with other students, making other students feel more comfortable, and more. The benefit is feeling pride in yourself for helping change the school.” explained Khloe Oum.
The SGA will take it’s first trip the the Fall Leadership Convention at TCNJ on Tuesday, October 10, 2023
