On Friday, November 15, the WTMS Spirit Club hosted its first Giving Back Night. This was a fruitful event for giving back to the community. At Winslow Township Middle School, students, staff and faculty came to give back to the community. These amazing community members gave back by making 241 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need!
Mrs. Miller, WTMS Spirit Club advisor, decided to share her thoughts about spirit night.
“This year we pitched it right away to Mr. Shropshire and he loved the idea. We knew that a few clubs had donation drives already in the fall and thought if we could get some of the community into the building, we would be able to collect more items for the drives”.
We asked Mrs. Miller about the preparation for the giving back night and who was involved.
To plan for the event, the school registered for the date with Unforgotten Haven in September and also held a meeting with club members in September also to let them know about the plan for Spirit night.
“Sabine Kernaghan was instrumental in securing a grant through the WTEA. This allowed us to purchase all the supplies for the homeless lunches. Each lunch bag had a sandwich, two snacks, napkins, hand sanitizer, a note from the students, and a bottle of water. The participants were given t-shirts and sling bags designed by Mrs. Sampson to mark the event,” continued Miller.
Mrs. Miller talks about how the event went after all of the preparation.
“We had about 40 people come to the event. We had families of staff and students alike. Kids were helping and dancing and coloring. Students, Parents, and Staff were making sandwiches, stuffing bags, and having fun! We promised to deliver 150 Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches and were able to deliver 241. Everyone stayed and hung out and cleaned up after we were done. It was a great event! We were also able to collect a big box of food for the food drive and a bunch more veterans’ donations for the SADD club’s veterans’ drive.”
The first Giving Back Night sounds like a huge success and we hope they continue this new community event!
