At Winslow Middle School, 8th grade National Junior Honor Society members got the opportunity to run for NJHS officer positions such as President, Vice President, Historian, Treasurer, and Secretary. The candidates had to write a detailed speech as to why their fellow members should elect them and film a video with TV production, then NJHS members got to vote.
Ms. Kiett, the advisor of NJHS, spoke about the qualifications of running for a position.
“NJHS members must be in the 8th grade and in good standing (active members, no NJHS probation). They must submit an “Intent to Run” form which indicates their desired position. The form is signed by the student and parent. Next, they have to complete a member profile that shows school involvement, community involvement, service hours and why they would like to run for that position. NJHS candidates should have a 3.5 or higher GPA, are active in a school sport, club or activity, serve their community and have positive discipline.”
So for any 7th graders looking to join NJHS, make sure to keep up your grades and stay out of trouble. Once students meet these requirements, the fun part begins. Campaigning! We got the pleasure of interviewing with our 2025 – 2026 Vice President Zion Ebisike and Historian Helena Samoyan about their experiences filming their campaign video.
Zion described, “I felt very confident and well spoken during the recording of my video, and even though I was nervous at first, I was still able to relax and get the spot.”
Helena added, “I felt nervous recording my officer video, because I was not sure if I was going to convince enough members to vote for me. However, I also felt acceptance because I knew that even if I did not get chosen, I tried my best.”
Confidence and clear communication is important but being an NJHS officer also means having supporting qualities and traits which Zion and Helena shared what they believe are great traits each officer should have when running for office.
“Some traits that someone running for an officer position should have are leadership, bravery, honesty, respect, responsibility, confidence, creativity, and passion. Without those traits I feel an officer would be dull and would not work to the best of their abilities to help others, Historian, Helena Samoyan explained.”
Vice President, Zion, added Some traits a good officer should have is confidence, respect and responsibility.”
Congratulations to this year’s NJHS Officers. We can’t wait to see what you will accomplish here at WTMS!
