Winslow Township Middle School just opened up a dance club after a six year hiatus! Ms. Lawry, a WTMS ELA teacher, is the creator and choreographer for the dance club. Dance comes with experience, confidence and talent.
Ms. Lawry has been dancing her whole life, and shares a passion for the art.
“I’ve honestly danced my whole life, I’m pretty sure if we dug through my parents’ photo albums, there’s a picture of three-year-old me in a sparkly tutu somewhere. Dance was everything for me growing up.”
Ms. Lawry also shared her favorite thing about teaching dance.
“Easy, the performances! There’s nothing like seeing all the hard work come to life on stage. I always end up tearing up because my dancers just shine.”
She also shared some goals she wants her student to have.
“I want my students to fall in love with dance, whether they’re naturals or just there to try something new. My biggest goal is for them to understand that dance goes way beyond TikTok’s. It’s about expression, storytelling, and confidence.”
While on the topic of students, Ms. Lawry also explained what she has planned for her students for this club.
“We’re planning to take part in a few performances this year, no matter what curveballs thrown our way. As the saying goes, the show must go on! If there’s a stage (or even just a space) and an audience, we’ll be there. The dancers are so committed that they’re even practicing virtually to keep the routines tight.”
Lastly Ms. Lawry shared what performances she is going to bring to the table this year.
“We’re mixing it up! I want the dancers to experience a variety of styles, so our performances will reflect that. We’ll be teaming up with the orchestra again, which means a beautiful ballet piece or something with a modern twist. If we land a halftime spot at a basketball game, expect a high-energy hip-hop number! We’ll also be performing at the “WTEA Members of Color” Black History event with a piece that ties into the theme. No matter where or what we perform, you can count on one thing: it’s going to be full of energy, passion, and leaving everything on the stage.”
We cannot wait to see what amazing performances are on store for the dance team!
