Winslow Township School STEM students rolled up their sleeves this past month to refresh the school garden after the lengthy summer months. They cleared out weeds, prepared the soil, prepared the garden and planted leafy greens.
“I chose this elective because I wanted to try the foods that we planted and help contribute to the cafeteria.” eighth grader Helena stated, a student in the Environmental S.T.E.M class.
The project was guided by the STEM teacher, Ms. Kiett, who worked alongside the students as they prepared the beds and planned on what to grow this season and the upcoming months. After the STEM club finished pulling weeds and turning the soil, they planted fresh and brand new crops for the fall.
“Planting lettuce and spinach is exciting because we’ll be able to see results pretty quickly,” stated Ms. Kiett, the teacher of the STEM program. “It also gives students hands-on experience in science and responsibility.”
Students say they are already looking forward to studying and checking on the plant’s growth, progress, and making sure the garden stays healthy and alive throughout the school year. This garden project is a part of the school’s ongoing efforts to teach sustainability and responsibility by real-world learning.
I can’t wait to come back and see the plants growing.” replied eighth grader Saphire, another member of the STEM class. “It’s nice to know we helped to start something that the whole school can enjoy.”
