A pipe leak at Winslow Township Middle School caused flooding that damaged several parts of the building, including the gym and hallways. Because of safety concerns, students were moved to a virtual hybrid learning schedule. While this change was necessary, it has been a big adjustment for many students and has affected how they learn day to day.
Many students shared that switching between online and in-person school has been difficult.
One student said, “It’s really hard to deal with because I understand my work more in person than online,” while another explained, “Online I’m not getting as much work done as when I’m in person.” Other students mentioned trouble focusing and keeping up with their grades. One response stated, “I haven’t been able to focus a lot and my grades are impacted.” Several students also talked about how the hybrid schedule has affected their sleep, with one student saying, “I wake up at different times… this throws off my sleep schedule.”
Although most students prefer being in school, some did find small positives about virtual learning. A few students said they liked “getting to stay home” or “being in bed while online.” Even so, the majority of students agreed that being in the classroom helps them learn better, stay focused, and feel more motivated.
Overall, the flooding at Winslow Township Middle School has impacted more than just the building—it has affected students’ learning, routines, and focus. While virtual learning has allowed school to continue, many students hope to return to full-time in-person learning soon. Being back at school would help students feel more comfortable, connected, and ready to succeed.
